Planning a Productive Retreat Isn’t Easy – But We Can Help!

The offsite corporate retreat.  People either love them or hate them, and it’s not hard to see why. Done correctly, retreats can be an effective way for your organization to bring about positive change. Done poorly however, and you end up with a wasted weekend and the possibility of making things in the office worse. It’s not an easy task to plan a retreat that is fun and productive, but MD Resort’s professional planners can lead you the whole way.

There are many reasons your organization may want to hold a retreat. The time away can help solve a specific company problem, explore new strategies, evaluate performance, or train in new areas. A corporate leader should also consider using a retreat for input, support, and creativity from their partners or employees.

Using a retreat to deal with sources of conflict or confusion is no easy task. The problem needs to be one that impacts the whole group, not just a few non-team players. The solution should be a method that involves members, rather than talking at people to get a point across. Let members voice their opinions on issues, and make sure you listen! General participation is key for any positive change to be made. Our professional staff can guide you in choosing the best solutions for any specific problems your organization may be facing.

A retreat is more than just a very long meeting. It’s a chance for co-workers, team members, board members, or managers to dig deeply into issues. This is most effectively done somewhere offsite so the group will not be distracted – a fresh environment yields fresh perspectives. MD Resort is the perfect location for any DFW business to have a retreat. Our ranch is only 25 minutes from downtown Fort Worth, in the beautiful country hills of Aurora.

Of course, don’t forget about the fun! Regardless of your retreat goals, a successful retreat needs to involve some downtime for good old fashioned fun. This time is a great opportunity for team members to learn things about one another they never would have otherwise. A team building environment encourages members to build natural bonds that can carry over to the workplace too! Remember that a good retreat will always have people occupied. No empty downtime that encourages isolation and exclusion!

MD Resort can help you plan your next retreat. We have experience seeing what works and what doesn’t. So give us a call and we will take time to discuss what your goals are and how we can make your next retreat the best ever!

Why Corporate Retreats are Coming Back

As the economy has begun a steady uptrend, corporations are realizing that making an intelligent investment in the right kind of retreat is a proven business tool.

Since their height in 2005, corporate retreats had seen a steady decrease in popularity. People have argued they are used as extravagant vacations and are a poor use of company funds. With the troubled national economy of the last decade, the desire to spend money on a corporate retreat diminished.

Retreats are seeing a post-recession comeback for a number of reasons.

Corporate training is on a steady increase, and retreats are an effective way to build team coordination and train employees. The self-contained nature of retreats decreases wasted time and can be fun for employees. Many businesses are learning how to have cost-effective retreats that have real benefits without the expensive fluff.  In the last couple years, corporate retreats have transformed into an important service for businesses by minimizing wastefulness and generating revenue in the long-term.

Here are some long-term benefits they can have for your business:

Retreats facilitate REAL friendships between your employees – Attempts to forge bonds between employees in the office often end in disaster. There can be very few shared interests among employees, which can prevent them from ever forming relationships on their own. Time spent at a corporate retreat is an opportunity for people to connect through participation in common activities. This time spent together allows employees to get to know one another and laugh together. Break time is always important to give between activities because it is during this time that people will come together and connect personally after interacting in activities together.

Retreats are times for training! Any business success depends on having well trained employees to get the job done effectively. The environment of a retreat develops team coordination, group problem-solving skills, and creativity. Skill building training can also be used at a retreat as a way to focus in-office training throughout the rest of the year. While fun activities are essential to a great retreat, productive activities that apply to your business goals of the year are also important to generate long-term revenue.

Retreats boost Moral! While retreats are not simply a vacation for the whole corporation, they are a place for employees to renew their excitement and enthusiasm for work. Retreats can be held in beautiful outdoor environments that reduce stress and give people an opportunity to refresh their thinking and come back to work with a new drive. A successful retreat will leave employees more excited and productive when returning to work.

Corporate retreats are seeing an increase in popularity because when done right, they are effective ways to increase the long-term bottom line while improving employee relations and moral.  To begin planning your retreat, plan your budget and choose an attractive location to enjoy! Bridal Emergency Wedding Kits List

Your wedding day is coming, and this is a day that is all about the two of you. Nothing should take away from that. After speaking to some wedding coordinators and being in the wedding business for over 10 years, I have made a list of must have essentials to help enure you a perfect wedding day. This is the Bridal Emergency kits that every bride should have!

Personal Items – Should be tailored to the bride. You know her perfect bridal perfume and what type of hair spray she prefers. Such a essential list that is so easy to forget!

  • Deodorant – spray works best because it can be used my more that just the bride.
  • perfume
  • hair essentials – hair spray, hair gel, brush, comb, hair pins
  • makeup – lipstick in a neutral color that will look great on anybody, someones lipstick is bound to be smeared, and mascara is a must if you dont have a makeup artist on hand.
  • feminine products
  • eye drops or contact solutions
  • A hanky – to carry down the aisle

Essential Wedding Related Items

The first thing that needs to be on this list is a no brainer for me,

  • Safety pens!!!

You have no idea how often I have had a bride, bridesmaid, Mother of the Bride, or aunt, uncle, distant cousin running up to me for safety pens. These are the duck tape of weddings. They do it all. From holding the flower girls dress up because it doesn’t fit her to repairing the small tear in the dress that uncle Bob stepped on when he was trying to make a dive for the beer someone was holding for him outside of the bridal suite. I am not creative enough to make this one up!

In addition to Safety pens, I suggest the following!

Apparel Related Items

There are many mishaps that can take place with the apparel of the wedding party, particularly the wedding dress. A stain or tear in these items would be disastrous on the special day. That is why the emergency wedding kit should also contain a list of items that can be used to repair or replace items that get ruined.

  • Extra nail polish of the brides choosing
  • Small sewing kit
  • stain remover
  • white chalk to cover stains on brides white dress
  • fashion tape – 2 sided tape that keeps away unwanted fashion feax pas.

Medications

  • Medications are so important, and so easy to forget on any hectic day. Any med’s the bride, groom or any member of the wedding party should be added to ensure that they have these medications on the day of the wedding. Allergies are especially important, especially if it is an outdoor wedding or reception.
  • Smelling salts shout be added to medications as well. It is fairly common for someone to pass out. All it takes is for someone to lock their legs straight and not move, add to that heat from being outside and not eating due to nerves, and smelling salts may be the best thing you decided to bring along.
  • Tylenol – tensions are high and pressure is on.

Miscellaneous emergency items

Other items that do not fall into the categories above may be forgotten in the hectic environment of the day as well. These items are often important and could cause the wedding to come to a standstill without them. These items include:

  • extra cash for emergencies
  • Rings – you may not be in charge of the actual wedding rings, but you would be amazed at how often they get left behind. Having cheap spares for the ceremony may just save the day.
  • Iron or steamer.
  • A list of important phone numbers.
  • Mints, toothbrush, toothpaste, and mouthwash.

Optional Items

  • Granola bars or other easy-to-carry snacks
  • Crazy Glue (for nail fixes, shoe heels, decorations, even jewels)
  • Sunblock

It is generally the maid of honor who is in charge of the bridal emergency kit, which is perfect! You have all the bridesmaids to help you put this incredibly thoughful basket together!

Happy days and beautiful weddings to you from MD Resort, North Fort Worth Texas!

May Chili Keep you Warm

Rainy day blues anyone. It is cold out, I have been listening to the blues all day. You know, the greats!

Lightnin Hopkins, Big Joe Turner, and Papa Charlie Jackson. Rich soulful toons to perfectly pair with the sound of the rain in the background coupled with the occasional boom of thunder.

It is May 12, one day after a beautiful sunny Mothers Day. You know the saying, don’t like the weather wait a minute. How about a day, and the weather will easily turn to a cool humid 68 degrees, the humidity doing what it does best, acting like a intensifier. The hot becomes unbearable and the cold is blood curdling. Oh how a Canadian would howl with laughter after hearing that one. 68 cold, bahhahah! Yet cold it is my friends.

So here I am thinking of my favorite cold weather winter foods that would help to toast up your insides and of course being from Texas my first instinct is to turn to chili (I am running to the store tonight to stock up on all the ingredients).

So here it is, my mamas chili recipe, don’t tell her I gave it to you.

Mamas Chili Recipe

The key to making great chili is to know that the recipe does not have to be exact. You use what you got and you make it work for you.

Ingredients

1 lb beef (venison, buffalo, elk, or whatever it is you have in your freezer)
tomatoes
tomato sauce
chili powder
onion powder
garlic powder
paprika
salt
pepper
any other spices you might like
ranch style beans (I know, a real Texan doesn’t use beans, so not true)
water

Instructions
Brown meat with spices
add tomato sauce and tomatoes with more spices
add ranch style beans and water with more spices
Taste, and spice to taste
let simmer for about an hour or less or more
Eat…so good.

So there you have it, a very simple (or for some extremely complicated) dish. Do yourself a favor and dont overthink it. Have a great night and warm wishes to my fellow this is too cold for May or ever Texans and all who just love a really great bowl of chili year round.

The Red Chair at MD Resort, North Fort Worth Texas

dscn1267MD Resort in North Fort Worth Texas was recently bestowed a great honor. We were given the red chair. Ok, so your thinking, it is a chair that happens to be red. Which is both true and even more so not true.

The Red chair is more than just a worn out chair with some wearing and random white paint splotches. The red chair is a symbol, it is a physical metaphoric manifistation that has come to represent humanity. It is a real thing that has traveled into the lives of many, and left behind good moments that will be looked back upon and cherished greatly. It is the thing that stories are made of, and stories are the beginnings of legends.

Those moments when inn keepers and B&Bers passed the chair forward to the next inn creating memories people will one day look back and remember when… the red chair, the journeys it has taken, and the people who were out there dragging, and lugging, and lifting a chair for the perfect photograph, the photo that creates wonder and causes complete strangers to fill in the blanks creating a story all their own.

So without further ado, I give you our pictures of the red chair.
